See from his head, his hands, his feet. Sorrow and love, flow mingled down. Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown.

Lyrics to Hymnal, “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.”

Today is Good Friday and as I sang Keith and Kristyn Getty’s rendition of this classic hymn, I’m reminded of the true gift that God gave to me: the gift of being able to choose righteousness while all my sin is paid for in advance. But out of this, I’m also given the ability to love God truly. John 14:15 says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” To love God is to obey his laws, to try anyway, and knowing that I’m forgiven each time I stumble and fail at this seemingly simple task. And what a precious gift it is for nothing I’ve ever done.
